The Appalachian Pathways Luncheon Series turns to politics with a May 21 luncheon program presented by Appalachian State history professor Karl Campbell. Dr. Campbell recently wrote the biography, “Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers," about North Carolina’s colorful and contradictory Senator Sam Ervin. He believes Ervin’s career is important to remember, and his stories will inspire you to reconsider some of the most significant events of recent American history. This biography has been widely applauded, and has received the North Caroliniana Book Award for 2007. Campbell is a thorough researcher and an entertaining speaker. This engaging and informative luncheon meets 12:00-1:30 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The program cost is $19, and will include multiple entree selections from the Broyhill luncheon buffet, as well as salads, drinks, and choice of desserts. The registration deadline is May 14. (812) Aquatic Sampling Saturday May 10, 2008 2:00 pm Wagoner Access Join a park ranger at the Wagoner Access office at 2:00 PM to sample the underwater life of the New River. Come prepared to get in a shallow portion of the river. Footwear should be appropriate to wear in the water. Sunscreen plus a hat is a good idea. Program will last approximately 1 hour. The Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp July 7-10 for rising 6th through 12th graders. The camps will meet from 6-9 p.m. and the fee is $120. This is the 11th year that this popular summer enrichment camp has been offered. This camp is designed to actively engage students in mathematics. Students who love math, fear math, hate math, excel at math and/or need help with math, are all welcome and encouraged to attend. In addition, 10 math camp participants will be invited to participate in an Extended Math Camp from 1-5 p.m. during Math Camp week. 4/5-6 Solar Water & Space Heating Attendees will learn how to best take advantage of a free and renewable fuel source to heat their home and water using proven and reliable technologies. Solar thermal applications are currently the most accessible and economically favorable of solar technologies available in the marketplace. Solar thermal systems are not new, but they are definitely exciting, and current tax credits make them more affordable than ever.
