Breakin Up Christmas, Friday Jan. 2,2009. Old time music frolic with food. The tradition is where musicians for at least 2 weeks before Christmas and up till the 6th of Jan. (Old Christmas), would gather each night at a different location to play music and dance. We at Phipps Farm and store glad to carry on this yearly event. The Humane Society of Wilkes will have a float in the Wilkes County Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6th. Members will also walk with some of the dogs that are available for adoption. The Jacked-UP Hillbillys will preform Free as a benefit concert in order to raise money for Brandie Miller,Family,and Employees of Brandie's Country Cafe! On Dec.4,2008 at 7pm held at the VFW in Boone,NC.A $5.00 donation will be taken at the door. On Nov.24,2008 the Family Restaurant Brandie's Country Cafe burnt down!As we all know this is the holiday seasons and each and everyone of the parties involved have hard times ahead with no jobs and this is the time to pull together as a community and as good people!Please come out the min.donation is $5.00 and any other contributions will be greatly appreciated!Must be 21 to attend!All proceeds go to the Family and employees!Please keep these family's in your thoughts and prayers!Thank You.

With the theme of Peace on Earth, Good Food for ALL', High Country UCC & friends will be collecting food & monitary donations at the back of their float during the Boone Christmas parade on 12/6/08! All donations will be disbursed between the Hunger Coalition & Hospitality House....so get those cans to the parade! Immediately after the parade, EVERYONE is invited to a no-cost, community 'Food for ALL' meal beside Tubelos on King Street in Boone. We will provide warm homemade veggie soup, bread, trail-mix & water...come out & join in the fun!

Mountains Rising on the Pacific Crest Trail Friday, December 5, 2008 7:00 pm US 221 Visitor Center A 45-minute DVD will be shown at the New River State Park Visitor Center by Allmuth “Curly” Perzel . Follow this scenic video as it takes you through the mountains of Oregon, California, and Washington State for over 2600 miles. Curly’s show will take you, by way of music and photos, on her exciting adventure, hiking the 2,638 mile Pacific Crest Trail. This program is free and open to the public, and will begin at 7:00pm. Meet at the Visitors Center at New River State Park to watch an informative video that prepares kids to go hiking with their families. The program will begin at 2:00 pm and last approximately 30 minutes. Weeds in Winter Sunday, December 14, 2008 US 221 Visitor Center 1:00 pm Watch a 30-minute slide program learning how to identify your favorite spring flowers in winter. Followed by a 30-minute walk to find a few weeds (weather permitting). Meet a Park Ranger at New River State Park’s Visitor Center for this exciting program. Skins and Skulls Saturday, December 20, 2008 US 221 Visitor Center 2:00pm Join a park ranger at the US Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center to talk about the different kinds of animals we have near the New River. We will discuss where they live, the tracks they leave behind and other interesting facts. Forever-green Sunday, December 21, 2008 US 221 Visitor Center 2:00 pm Join a park ranger on a short hike (approximately 30 minutes) to look at the evergreens growing at New River State Park. Participants will meet at the Hwy 221 Access Visitor center. Wear warm clothing and appropriate footwear for walking on trails. After the hike we will go back to the Visitor Center to make a forever-green craft. All programs are open to the public and are free of charge.
