I really like sparrows, so I really like this time of year. This week saw the return of good numbers of Swamp Sparrows and a few Lincoln's. Savannahs are a possibility now along with Vespers and there are good numbers of Chipping and Filed Sparrows on the move right now. In a week or so look for White-throated and White-crowned and maybe a Fox Sparrow.
Folks have seen good stuff since the last update including a probable Great White Heron at Linville land harbors. This bird has been around for more than a month and we are trying to get a picture for the next iupdate. This would be a first regional record for this large heron.
Tucker (the young man who talked about his science project at the last Audubon meeting) had an escaped Zebra Finch in his yard last week and got some great shots (see below).
Recent birds out at Meat Camp include a Bald Eagle last week by Anita, Martha, and Betsy. Also this weekend. Pat Burns had a Philadelphia Vireo, Lincoln's Sparrow, and Nashville Warbler there and today (Monday) I had several Swamp Sparrows and a Lincoln's Sparrow as well as a great and cooperative Marsh Wren. Still Tennessee Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks around as well.
Tucker had this Zebra Finch at his feeder last week.
